Indonesia has a population greater than 240 million and represents the 4th largest nation in the world. Approximately 66 % of the population is active labour force. Its economy is the 16th largest in the world and has therefore become a member of The Group of 20 (G-20). Under the first administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from 2004-2009, Indonesia introduced financial reform, bureaucracy reform as well as tax and customs reform.

Since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008, Indonesia has weathered the global financial crisis relatively smoothly. Although the world economy slowed significantly, Indonesia posts positive annual economic growths during the current financial crisis. However, the government of Indonesia still faces the on-going challenge of improving Indonesia's insufficient infrastructure, mainly in transportation and energy sectors. As Indonesia’s economy has grown for the past several years, Indonesia is faced now with the increasing energy consumption and GHG emissions due to its increasing economic activity.
